Can You Take Moringa for Goiter Treatment? – The Answer Is Yes

November 1, 2017

Moringa is a superfood that is absolutely jammed packed with nutrients, making it a natural remedy and even cure for many illnesses, conditions, and even diseases. Being able to take moringa for goiter treatment is one of the many benefits that this miracle plant has.

In this short post I’ll be going over what goiter is, how moringa helps treat it and I’ll even show you some interesting studies that prove how effective it is for such a treatment.

A Little Background on Goiter

Goiter is a condition that causes the thyroid to grow abnormally large. Because the thyroid is located inside your neck, this appears from the outside as swollen lumps on the neck.

This condition is commonly by irregular hormone production by the thyroid. According to the American Thyroid Association, it can be caused by both too much hormone production as well as not enough hormone production.

And the logical question to ask here would be “what causes irregular hormone production in the thyroid?” There are more than one cause of this but the most common cause that there is is iodine deficiency.

Iodine deficiency used to be a big problem in the US, but since the government took action, in ways such as putting iodine in salt (iodized salt), this is not such a common problem in the states anymore. However, in other parts of the world, usually with high rates of poverty, goiter is still very much a problem due to lack of iodine.

Moringa as a Treatment

Moringa has been, and is still being used, to treat goiter in third-world nations. One project that started in 2006 by the World Outreach Foundation provides people in the Philippines with moringa to help treat this condition.

Treatment with moringa can be very effective. A study I came across that was performed on rates showed that moringa extract was able to reduce T4 in the blood as well and be an effective treatment for hyperthyroidism, which is when the thyroid produces too much hormone. So although this study wasn’t performed to test moringa’s effects directly against goiter, one can deduce that it is indeed effective having shown to be effective against hyperthyroidism.

There are also many stories online from people who have had goiter, which are not scientifically backed, that claim moringa worked as an effective treatment for them. There is a good story by Linda of lindamoringa.com about how she had goiter for over 10 years and ended up treating it with moringa.

Why Moringa Is So Effective

There really isn’t all that much information out there on why moringa is an effective treatment for goiter.

However, I do know there moringa is known to be a good source of iodine. It is considered a mild source of iodine and in the The Merck Index 14th Edition 4 moringa leaves are listed as providing a “gentle amount”, however it doesn’t specify how much. This is likely because the amount of iodine that moringa contains depends greatly on the area in which is was grown. If there is iodine in the soil that it is grown in then some of this iodine will end up in the plant.

Since iodine deficiency is the #1 cause of goiter and moringa contains iodine in gentle amounts, it is obvious that the iodine content is one of the reasons it is an effective treatment. Whether or not there are other nutrients that moringa contains that play a role in its effectiveness are unknown to me.

Should You Take Moringa for Goiter?

Of course you should always consult with a doctor beforehand. But yes, I would say go for it. It is a proven treatment and one of the most nutrient dense superfoods on the planet. It will provide many benefits beyond goiter treatment.
